Racism on Repeat - Jordan Davis' Murder's Trial Begins

The cover of Jet magazine shows
the legitimate fear these crimes create.
NOTE: I apologize in advance for my aggressive voice in this piece, but sometimes you just can't help it.

It hasn't even been a full year since George Zimmerman was acquitted of the murder (yes, murder) of Trayvon Martin in 2012, who threaten Zimmerman with the deadly weapon of a sidewalk after he was stalked by Zimmerman. And yet we find ourselves witnessing another high profile trial of Stand Your Ground racism at work in Florida. Showing once again how this law is aimed to protect white shooters, not black victims.

In November of 2012, Jordan Davis, 17, was gunned down by a 47 year old man who apparently feared for his life, after the shooter initiated contact over the teenagers "disrespectful" behavior. Michael Dunn (the shooter) told Davis and his friends to turn down their loud music and after their refusal and some heated words, he opened fire on the car, killing Davis.

Dunn claims that Davis was pointing a shotgun or maybe a lead pipe (neither of which were recovered) out the window at Dunn. He panicked, reached into his glove box to pull out his semiautomatic pistol and then proceeded to shoot Davis through the door three times and when the teens tried escape by driving away, he continued firing while he started to get out of his vehicle, clearly still feeling threatened.

Justice for Trayvon Martin March
Steven Smith testified at the trial that he heard the loud music, turn down then back up again, heard someone say "Nope, you're not going to talk to me like that," saw a man pull out his gun and shoot at the SUV. Other witnesses have similar stories, none of which involve seeing a weapon in the victims' possession.

Dunn then proceeded to move on to his hotel, eat a pizza, and watch a movie, not bothering to report the incident. Apparently, the threat was over and he was able to move on with his life. Dunn and his girlfriend spent the night at the hotel and headed home where he was apprehended. Dunn later claimed that it was his girlfriend who pressured him to leave and she was the hungry one, etc.

THEN! Oh yes, there is more. He was questioned by police and finally put in prison (and denied bail because the judge saw him as a threat, at least there's that?) he wrote to his grandmother with a very telling point of view of his fellow inmates:
The jail is full of blacks and they all act like thugs. This may sound a bit radical but if more people would arm themselves and kill these (expletive) idiots, when they're threatening you, eventually they may take the hint and change their behavior.
Luckily for his sake, he is not a racist, a bit radical perhaps, but not a racist. He claims he has nothing against race, just the "gangster-rap, ghetto talking thug 'culture.'" See? Not racist. He is probably correct then when he points out that it's not him, it's the blacks who are racist: "My fear is that if I get 1 black on my jury it will be a mistrial as I am convinced they will be racially biased." The ridiculousness of these statements may be why his attorney asked the judge overseeing the case to not allow these letters to be referenced in the trial. She also asked that Davis not be referred to as a "victim." Clearly, being shot to death does not make you a victim.

A classmate of Jordan Davis breaks down
at Davis' funeral.
You know what the problem is? Liberal media of course! Dunn appears to blame the press for his bad rap forming in public opinion stating, "I'm not getting much in the way of sympathy from the press. They're a bunch of liberal bastards!"

Dunn is facing a first-degree murder charge and three attempted first-degree murder charges, which would result in a sentence of life in prison without the chance of parole. Most likely, if he is found guilty, he will end up in a mostly black prison (any prison really) and will get the chance to understand what it's like to be at the bottom of the food chain.

This continued perceived threat of young black kids toward their armed adult "superiors" shows how racism is still running rampant in this country and while not always obvious, it is very, very real. The kind of fear this spreads into the black community, the parents of black teens, and the teens themselves is unimaginable.

The ignorance of Dunn and those who believe the "thug" culture is a self-created phenomena, the violence in the ghettos, and tough look and attitude is completely a self-contained issue is extremely frustrating.

Institutionalized racism, blatant racism, our country's history, and people like Dunn have helped to create a world where teen-aged boys can be killed simply because they look threatening, and it is completely ridiculous. How do you think the entire black community feels about the police and whites? Completely safe around them, I'm sure.

  1. First let me say, "Great read, Amber."
With that said, ATTENTION, YOUNG PEOPLE OF DARK SKIN PIGMENT: don't take Skittles or a boom-box to a gun fight. If every light-skinned, Florida yahoo is gonna view you as thuggy, get a permitted firearm and express your uppity 2nd amendment rights between your aggressor's eyes. But what is just as apparent from this case is that Florida's DA's are bat-sh!t delusional - 1st degree murder involves a plan. Didn't anyone learn from Trayvon's DA's error? The light skinned perpetrators in each Florida case shot from the hip like they were in a wild west show - welcome to the world of 2nd degree murder. Florida, please. Your DA's hopes are as unrealistic as Bush's when he stood beneath the "Mission Accomplished" banner. And on an unrelated note: in the time between Trayvon and Jordan being murdered, 100 people of color were killed in Florida by motor vehicles, 100 more from hospital/medical incompetence, and 100 more from eating corporate "food" and contracting life ending diseases. The media outrage of those 300 unjustified deaths: crickets. "WE WANT CHANGE!" "When do we want it?" "WHENEVER!"
